Will and Lauren are physicians in the Detroit metro area with a great love for cats and supporting the local community. The first chapter of their lives together started during medical school in Pennsylvania when Will adopted Sirius (a Bengal cat) from a rescue organization. Much to Will's surprise when Lauren came into their life, Sirius shared a special bond with her. Her lap was one of his favorite spots! In 2015, Will and Lauren brought Arcturus (an F2B Savannah) and Cygnus (a Maine Coon) into their lives as kittens. During this time, there were so many great milestones including Lauren and Will's wedding and purchasing their first home together. Another milestone came in 2017 when Arcturus and Cygnus were awarded titles from the Guinness Book of World Records. Arcturus holds the Guinness World Record for being the tallest domestic cat, measuring at about 19 inches and Cygnus is the domestic cat with the world’s longest tail, measuring at more than 17 inches. Will and Lauren sought the records to raise awareness about the Ferndale Cat Shelter, a local shelter they support. The phrase "pets are family members" could not be truer as Cygnus, Sirius, and Arcturus were loved by their parents so much as well as by the Farmington Hills, Michigan community.
The next chapter of their lives started on November 12, 2017 when Will and Lauren lost their home and all of their worldly possessions in a fire. Will awoke to alarms and tried to put out the fire and find and save Cygnus, Arcturus, and Sirius. He was not able to find any of them before he was overcome with smoke and physically removed by the fire rescue team. Although Will opened as many doors as he could prior to being removed, they were positive all of the cats perished until sightings occurred in Farmington Hills neighborhoods surrounding theirs in the weeks following the fire. Following weeks of excavation, it was confirmed that Guinness World Record Holders Arcturus and Cygnus, along with their brother Sirius, remained in the home despite Will's best efforts to find them and give them escape routes.
Losing their home in the fire was not how they anticipated 2017 coming to an end. However, that event pales in comparison to the subsequent loss of their beloved boys. They had (and still have) so many feelings of guilt, grief, anger, and ultimately the question as to why this happened to them, all because an "off" massage chair spontaneously burst into flames. Unfortunately they will never know why, and those feelings will always be a part of their lives now. The only feelings that can override the bad ones are the good ones they have when they think about how lucky they were to be fur parents to Cygnus, Sirius, and Arcturus. The happiness they gave Will and Lauren was a feeling beyond compare and they are incredibly grateful for the time they had with them.
Our love for our cats, and cats in general, prompted us to make the first big change in our lives in 2018. We whole-heartedly support adopt-don’t-shop and have previously adopted rescue cats but for now, a kitten felt right. The two newest members of the Starcats family, bengal kittens Polaris and Hyperion, joined our family and have helped our healing process incredibly so far. They are not replacements as our boys can never be replaced in life or in our hearts although we understand to some it may seem that way.
New best friends Polaris and Hyperion will be joining us on our doctor's recommended plans of 2018, which is a cross-country trip to the national parks in our newly acquired RV (Cryptocurrency has been an unexpected blessing). We understand the strain this will put on our patients and appreciate their understanding that mentally and physically we need a break from caring for others and need to care for ourselves right now. We are incredibly grateful for the support of our colleagues and we hope to get back into the swing of things soon as we are committed to Michigan and our patients here. We will be building on the site of the fire, and are currently living in temporary housing as this process continues.
